Having a clean, tidy desk is essential for your work performance, so we’ve compiled some office cleaning tips.
For wooden desks
- Be careful not to use any abrasive or harsh chemicals, as this will damage the wood.
- The best method to clean these desks is to use a damp microfibre cloth from hot soapy water.
- Do not wet the desk too much as this will soak into the wood.
- You can also use wood-safe polish to give your desk an extra shine.
For other types of desks
Dust builds up on desks very quickly and if you have lots of clutter on your desk you tend not to clean all the areas you should be.
- Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth to wipe your computer screen for fingerprints, etc.
- You can accompany this with a screen cleaner, but must be used very scarcely.
Cable Management
Tangled cables not only look messy but can also trap dust and make cleaning more cumbersome. Use cable ties or a cable management box to keep cords neatly organised and out of sight. This simple step can drastically reduce clutter and make your workspace look more organised (and avoid tripping!!).
Keyboard and Mouse Cleaning
These are high-touch areas that can harbor germs and debris. Use compressed air to blow out crumbs and dust from your keyboard. For deeper cleaning, lightly dampen a microfibre cloth and gently clean the keys and mouse. This prevents build-up and maintains hygiene.
Desk Organisers
Invest in desk organisers or trays to keep your supplies in order. Having a designated spot for everything reduces clutter and minimises the time spent searching for your stuff. This also makes it easier to clean your desk surface regularly.
Air Quality
Don’t overlook the importance of air quality in your workspace. Indoor plants can naturally purify the air, and a small desk fan or air purifier can keep the air fresh, helping with focus and well-being.
Regular Decluttering
Set aside time each week to declutter your desk and office space. This not only keeps your workspace clean but also gives you an opportunity to review and organise your work priorities.
Personal Touches
Finally, adding personal touches like a framed photo or a small plant can make your workspace feel more inviting and pleasant.
Another important part of a clean space is your desk chair, which after some time used can need some TLC (tender love & care). We have a great little tip for those older desk chairs with fabric seats. The fabric can start to become bobbly (where the cotton material balls up) and this can be quite hard to remove as it won’t vacuum off. Instead, you can use a shaving razor to remove the boobles easily. Then you can simply use a vacuum to hoover up the debris.
